Nature & it’s benefits

There’s something truly special about stepping outside, feeling the sun (or rain) on your face, and breathing in the fresh air. Nature isn’t just a backdrop… it’s a powerful teacher, healer, and playground for children and families.

Regulates Emotions – The sights, sounds, and textures of nature help calm the nervous system, making it easier for kids to manage big emotions.

Encourages Movement – Running through the grass, jumping in puddles, climbing trees, or balancing on logs builds coordination, strength, and confidence.

Boosts Mental Health – Time outside reduces stress, supports sensory regulation, and fosters creativity.

Strengthens Connection – Whether it’s a nature walk, gardening, or simply cloud-watching, outdoor time brings families closer, creating lasting memories.

Nature reminds us to slow down, be present, and find joy in the simple things.

Let’s hear from some of our wonderful team, and why nature is so important to them…

‘It's pretty well documented that being out in nature is good for our mental health. Sometimes the motivation to get outside is low, especially at this time of year when it's cold and wet and miserable but once we're out, it's never as bad as we think it'll be!

As a family we've always been out a lot and I'm very lucky that my job allows me to be outside whenever we want. Physical activity is important but for us it's the freedom - the freedom to explore, to be loud, to experiment, to jump in puddles, to get a bit dirty and not have to worry about the mess. We feel calmer outside, even if that looks like running and climbing and jumping! Anxiety is low, stress is reduced and confidence is high.

The natural world is full of wonder, curiosity and creativity and we find being mindful is so much easier outside. There's always a special stick, a colourful leaf or an interesting mushroom to stop to look at. Sometimes it's a bit frustrating when you just want to go for a walk but my children are much better at living ‘in the moment’ than I am!’ - Shelby

‘Nature speaks to me so much, I love how when you’re outside little random moments of nature get the opportunity to reveal themselves. It feels like a natural treasure hunt!

The space, the smells and sounds, the beauty of the colours and the design of the flowers, plants and trees. The quick peep from a creature or bird. It’s so life giving to us individually and as a family. It brings a present connectedness too, as screens get forgotten about and the chores of home get left behind for a moment.

Once we are all outside our moods are lifted, and we get gentle space to talk and share experiences together.

If I’m ever feeling anxious or overwhelmed, a walk or a moment sitting on a bench in nature helps me to feel much calmer and happier. NATURE = LIFE!!’ - Vicky

‘Being in nature is really important to us as a family. It allows us to connect with the outdoors as well as with each other. We enjoy going on woodland walks with our dog. It’s not only good for our physical health but mental health too. We always make it fun by sharing stories, going on bug hunts and scavenger hunts and taking photos of toadstools or wild flowers we find.  It’s lovely to see all the different seasons during our walks.  In the warmer months we like to go on bike rides, go for picnics or take a trip to seaside.

Getting outside in nature  is also great for some well needed regulation for my daughter as it helps her to feel happier and relaxed. As a sensory seeker she loves the sound of stomping  on crunchy leaves or getting her wellies on and splashing in puddles’ - Lara

‘The sea always brings me so much peace, the sound of the waves and the sun shining on the water and sand makes me feel so comfortable and happy’ - Lesha
